Norwalk and New Rochelle were cited as the perfect Connecticut and New York locations, respectively, for older residents who have seen their children grown and moved out, according to the new “The Best City in Every State for Empty Nesters” published by the technology firm Niche.
The new study number-crunched housing costs, the number of cultural institutions and restaurants, the local crime and tax rates and the proximity to a major airport in determining its choices. For Connecticut, Niche acknowledged Danbury, Fairfield, Westport, Milford and Waterbury as worthy locations, but it ultimately settled on Norwalk as the state”™s best site for empty nesters.
“Norwalk ”“ with its low tax rate, charming downtown and bustling marina ”“ is a cut above the rest,” the report said. “Bonus: if you”™re looking for a night in the big city, the Metro-North Railroad commuter line will get you to Grand Central in Manhattan in 65 minutes flat.”
Across the border, New Rochelle reigned among New York”™s localities as a mecca for empty nesters.
“Whether it”™s a hamlet on Long Island or a village on the Hudson, there are endless places to resettle in New York,” the report said. “Few beat New Rochelle. Flush against the Long Island Sound, at the very southernmost point of Westchester County (that”™s the nice one), a full quarter of the population is between the ages of 45 and 64. And if you”™re ever looking for a night on the town, you”™re just a 40-minute commuter rail ride away from Manhattan.”
