John W. Hetherington, an attorney and former member of the Connecticut General Assembly, passed away on June 14 at the age of 84.
Hetherington was born in Queens, New York, on Aug. 15, 1938, and served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain. He graduated from Yale College and Yale Law School and worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York before joining the legal department of West Virginia Pulp & Paper Corp. in 1967. He joined the local law firm Rucci, Burnham, Carta & Carello LLP in 2002.
Hetherington represented New Canaan and the western portion of Wilton (125th Assembly District) in the Connecticut General Assembly from 2003 until 2013. A Republican, Hetherington was a Ranking Member on the Judiciary Committee.
Hetherington was also active in local nonprofits, including work as a director of New Canaan Neighborhoods United Way of New Canaan.
