Three national retailers will move into the defunct Kmart store at the Yorktown Green Shopping Center as part of the Yorktown Town Board’s plan to reinvent its retail areas.
T.J. Maxx, Michael’s and Five Below, which will fill the empty big box store at 335 Downing Drive, are expected to continue the revitalization of the shopping center, which began in 2022 when Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace moved into a former-supermarket space that had been vacant for 10 years.
“The Town Board has made every effort to facilitate a renaissance for this vital property in the center of Yorktown Heights’ business district, and we will soon see the results of our work,” said Deputy Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “We will continue our economic development work by focusing on other local shopping centers that require reimagination.”
Indeed, Yorktown Green is not the only retail center in the municipality expecting new store openings. A Mr. Softee and Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs have opened in the former Subway space at 1992 Commerce St., while a Crumbl Cookies bakery is preparing to open near the BJ’s Wholesale Club on Crompond Road.
T.J. Maxx – part of TJX Companies, which owns HomeGoods and Marshalls, among other North American brands – is a department store with more than 1,000 locations nationwide that are known for their deals on fashion and home décor. Michael’s is an arts and crafts retailer with more than 1,200 stores in North America. Five Below, a specialty discount store with about 1,500 locations nationwide, prices most of its products at $5 or less.
“We are thrilled to welcome T.J.Maxx, Michael’s and Five Below to the Yorktown Green Shopping Center,” said Eden Kongoli, vice president of Oster Properties, a commercial and residential real estate management company serving New York and New Jersey. “These new stores will not only enrich our retail offerings but also contribute to the vitality and vibrancy of our community. We look forward to providing an exceptional shopping experience for all our visitors.”
Oster Properties has not announced opening dates for the stores. The company has a request before the Yorktown Planning Board for alterations to the former Kmart.
