Polo may be the sport of kings (and now queens as well) since its founding in ancient Persia, but according to Forbes magazine, it has increasingly gone mainstream, thanks in part to the success of U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand of the United States Polo Association. As Forbes magazine notes:
“It continues to climb the retail ranks as one of the largest global licensed sports brands in the world, ranking consistently alongside the NFL, ML and NBA. The brand closed out 2023 with $2.4 billion in global sales and is targeting $3 billion and 1,500 retail stores in the next few years.”
But does dressing like a polo player or spectator translate to attending the matches? On select summer Sundays, you’ll find some 3,000 people at Greenwich Polo Club, the backcountry home of high-goal polo and one of the sport’s most successful teams, White Birch. (It’s also the name of the farm and paper company owned by businessman, philanthropist and art collector Peter M. Brant, who co-founded Greenwich Polo Club in 1981.)
Matches take place at 3 p.m. with the gates opening at 1 p.m., beginning with the American Cup on June 9. It’s followed by the East Coast Silver Cup June 16, 23 and 30; the East Coast Gold Cup July 7 and 14; and the East Coast Open Aug. 25 and Sept. 8.
