With a projected record $6.4 billion spent on jewelry this past Valentine’s Day, the engagement season that takes off in December is in full swing, and National Proposal Day (March 20, the first full day of spring) is right around the corner.
Lovebirds love their diamonds, said Rare Carat, an online diamond marketplace that has released a study on the most and least expensive states for engagement rings after analyzing purchases from 22 million users. (The most popular diamond engagement ring is a round, one-carat diamond, color G and VS2 clarity.)
Now for the most expensive states for engagement rings. Not surprisingly, the Northeast factors heavily into this with New York and Connecticut Nos. 1 and 4 respectively. The 10 most expensive states in order are New York, averaging $11,434 per ring; California, $10,582; New Jersey, $10,445; Connecticut, $9,744; Massachusetts, $9,636; Nevada, $9,458; Florida, $9,298; Texas, $8,915; Illinois, $8,801; and Rhode Island, $8,787.
Looking for a bargain? Hop on a plane for South Dakota, where an engagement ring on average will set you back $4,923.
