President Biden is nominating former Hudson Valley Congressman Sean Patrick Maloneyto become Representative of the United States of America to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Business Journals learned from The White House. Maloney will have the rank of ambassador. The Senate would need to confirm the nomination.
Maloney was elected five times to represent New York”™s 18th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, and served from 2013 to 2023. As a result of redistricting, Maloney was running for reelection in New York’s 17th Congressional District that includes all or parts of Rockland, Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties. He was defeated by Republican Mike Lawler.
While in Congress, Maloney chaired both the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure as well as the Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development Subcommittee of the House Committee on Agriculture. He served as a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and was elected by his colleagues to House leadership in 2020.
Maloney would succeed Jack Markell who became the ambassador to the OECD on February 11, 2022. Markell previously served as the White House Coordinator for Operation Allies Welcome where he worked on resettling Afghans in the U. S. Markell also served two terms as Governor of Delaware and had chaired the National Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association.
According to The White House, Maloney is the author of more than 40 pieces of legislation that became law. Prior to serving in Congress, Maloney served as President Clinton’s White House staff secretary, and in the private sector helped found a financial services software company and worked as a partner at two law firms.
Maloney earned undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. The White House noted that he was the first openly LGBT person ever elected to Congress from New York. He and his husband, Randy Florke, recently celebrated their 30th anniversary and have raised three children together.
Ahhh, a nice soft landing for a faithful democrat party apparatchik who was a loyal Clintonite for many years. Anything beats having to find a REAL JOB after “serving” in Congress for ten years.
