Thinking of bringing some luxury items to PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow”? You might want to hold on the handbags, the Chanel bouclé (tweed) jackets and the Patek Philippe Nautilus watch. These have all decreased in value in the last six years, including the Dior Lady Dior handbag and – horrors – the Hermès Kelly and Birkin (Togo) bags. (Only the Chanel 2.55 bag increased in value, 5.3%.)
This according to Arka.com’s recent study, which shows the price changes of luxury items over the last six years, sorting the data into two main categories – those with the highest increases in value and those with the biggest decrease. Certain jewelry pieces did the best, with Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alhambra Collection increasing the most (19.44%), followed by the Cartier Love Bracelet (8.16%), the Bulgari Serpenti Collection (6.94%) and the Rolex Daytona watch (4.76%).
Of course, costs and values are relative, aren’t they? Even with a 7.69% decline, a Patek Philippe Nautilus is still at $70,036 more valuable than any of the other items that increased in value.
