Eversource and United Illuminating both petitioned Connecticut regulators for significant increases in the rates they may charge residents for electricity last week.
The requests would see Eversource charge customers 19 percent more while United Illuminating sought a 12 percent increase.
Republican Senate Leader Stephen Harding of Brookfield and Ryan Fazio, who represents Greenwich and is the Ranking Senator on the energy and technology committee issued a joint statement in response.
“This is yet another example of why we as policymakers need to work in bipartisan fashion to pass policies that will ease burdens for Connecticut ratepayers now and in the future. Senate Republicans have put forth several policy solutions to make energy more affordable, protect consumers, and strengthen oversight of the utilities. Some of our ideas have garnered bipartisan support, but clearly, we must do more. State utility regulators must go over these requests with a fine-toothed comb, and we are confident they will do so. Our state is already unaffordable for working and middle-class families. We must make sure ratepayers are not put on the hook for unnecessary and excessive billings.”
