Or better said, baby you should rent this car. From whom? For our recent trip to the island of Maui, our hands-down choice was Sixt Car Rental.
Sixt is a family-owned company, headquartered in Munich, that has been in the rental car industry for more than 100 years. It operates in 80 U.S. city locations and 44 U.S. airports, including in Connecticut and New York, with 2,000 locations worldwide in more than 105 countries.
No surprise at those numbers: Our recent experience with Sixt was a good one, with excellent service that is just one of the ways it differentiates itself from other rental car companies. Let’s start with the online booking experience. Sixt’s website is engineered to assure the process is as simple as possible. We also found the vehicle selection to be of a much wider variety than other car rental companies we have dealt with. You can choose traditional gas-powered cars, electric vehicles and even mopeds and e-scooters. Sixt has built out a high inventory of electric vehicles and more luxury ones than most rental companies. Luxury models include the BMW 2 and 3 series, with the most German auto imports of all car rental companies. New cars on average are only three months old.
We rented a new BMW Series 3 electric car. When a Sixt staffer (named Anthony) brought us to our vehicle, we said we had never driven an EV before. He could have just given us basic operating instructions and moved on to the next customer. Instead, he spent nearly a half-hour with us, walking us through the entire range of operational items we’d need to know and how to best enjoy the vehicle. That’s the Sixt difference.
As to our BMW Series 3 EV: We had always thought that electric vehicles would be far less powerful than gas-powered cars. We were quite wrong. This car had more power and faster acceleration and better responsiveness than we would have ever guessed. If our BMW Series 3 EV had wings, it could have taken off. The entire experience of renting from Sixt to driving this stunning EV made for memories we wouldn’t have had if we had rented from the more conventional companies.
Obviously, the wildfires of Aug. 8 devastated the historic Maui town of Lahaina and immediately surrounding areas. The Sixt organization has committed to doing all that it can to assist the residents affected by this tragedy and serve the people of Maui and visitors to the island in the true spirit of aloha.
Here’s what you should know about booking your car on Maui – should you decide to visit the island in the near future – which we believe is a great idea: In addition to its branch at Maui Kahului Airport, Sixt recently opened a second one at Four Seasons Resort Maui – its first car rental branch at a Four Seasons property in the United States. (We just love Four Seasons Maui. This resort is the epitome of island elegance.) Sixt’s positioning here will bring its exceptional service and premium fleet to this special resort, just 30 minutes from Kahului Airport, providing easy access to the island’s most popular destinations, including three golf courses, the luxury boutiques and restaurants of The Shops at Wailea and other area attractions.
Also, the vehicles in the Sixt fleet are a perfect fit for the needs and preferences of Four Seasons Resort Maui’s clientele. Both Four Seasons Resort Maui guests and area travelers can enjoy the convenience of renting vehicles directly on-site, by booking online at www.Sixt.com or on the Sixt app.
When all is said and done – you just may want to check out Sixt’s pastel-pink Moke – it’s probably the most fun you will have on Maui.
