Touro College in Manhattan has closed on its $60-million acquisition of New York Medical College in Valhalla from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
A formal announcement is scheduled for May 25 in New York City, said a New York Medical College spokesperson.
Archdiocesan and Touro officials in December 2009 signed an agreement to transfer control of the college on the Westchester Medical Center campus to an affiliate of Touro, a nonprofit Jewish institution. Though the deal was scheduled to be completed last summer, the agreement was extended to May 31 while Touro awaited approval from the U.S. Department of Education to offer federal loans to medical students.
The New York Archdiocese sponsored the independent nonprofit medical school since 1978.
