For those who fear that artificial intelligence (AI) technology will result in the elimination of jobs, an IBM executive is offering assurances that AI will not lead to mass layoffs within the Armonk-headquartered company.
In an interview with MoneyCentral.com, IBM Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Nickle LaMoreaux stated that the company will use AI to replace or supplement certain tasks and roles, which would allow employees to focus on different responsibilities.
“I think there are very few jobs that are going to be completely replaced by AI – very few jobs,” she said. “I also believe that there are going to be very few jobs that will be totally brand new. From an HR perspective, I worry that all of the media on this is getting it completely wrong.”
LaMoreaux noted that CEO Arvind Krishna’s comments regarding the replacing of 30% of IBM’s non-customer-facing positions with AI and automation were taken “a little bit out of context.” She noted the company employs roughly 300,000 people and stressed that while maybe 2% of jobs would be eliminated, another 2% of new jobs will be created.
“The bigger challenge for all of us is the 96% of jobs in the middle that are going to change,” she said. “They are still going to exist, but how we do them will be completely different. I think the narrative is going wrong because people are talking about AI as a replacement technology—it’s really a supplement.”
