VNS Westchester gala raises $125,000
White Plains-based VNS Westchester (VNSW) held its 17th annual benefit gala attracting a crowd of more than 200 participants and nearly $125,000 in contributions, May 12 at the Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison. This annual event helps the nonprofit to fulfill its mission.
Hosted by Michael Gargiulo, NBC4 New York anchorman, the gala”™s awards ceremony honored Frank Corvino, chairman of the Greenwich Hospital Foundation and recipient of VNSW”™s 2015 Distinguished Service Award, and Sumir Sahgal, chief medical officer of EssenMed House Calls and recipient of VNSW”™s Community Leadership Award.
Friends announce volunteer program
Friends of Westchester County Parks (Friends), an organization that encourages the public to support the preservation of the 18,000 acres of parks, trails and open spaces in the county, launched Volunteer with Friends, a community service program inviting residents to help with the beautification of parks. Activities ”“ raking, mulching, planting ”“ take place on the third Saturday of each month from May to October.
Braemar opens in Middletown
The Braemar at Wallkill assisted living facility recently opened a location in Middletown, offering 130 living units for seniors, 20 of which are already occupied. The senior staff team has also expanded, including the appointing of Harold Hildred, director of activities; Matthew J. Johnson, director of environmental services; Heather Cloke, director of resident services; and Nancy Rosen LaTorre, director of social work.
Curtis Instruments named best
Mount Kisco-based Curtis Instruments Inc. was recognized as the fourth-best company to work for in the state in the “largest employer” category by The New York State Society for Human Resource Management at the eighth annual awards, April 21. With more than 1,000 employees worldwide, Curtis, now celebrating its 55th anniversary, specializes in instrumentation, battery monitoring and motor speed controllers for electric vehicles.
Phelps Golf Classic
The 12th annual Phelps Golf Classic is being held June 8 at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on Route 9 in Scarborough. This year”™s co-chairmen are Bill and Ellen Melvin of Scarborough and John and Allison Robbins of Sleepy Hollow. WPH welcomes Smith
White Plains Hospital appointed Laurence R. Smith as the chairman of the board of directors, succeeding J. Michael Divney. Smith was approved as the board chairman at the hospital”™s annual board meeting, April 27. He has been a member of the board since 2004 and has held the positions of vice chairman of the board and chairman of the finance committee from 2012-2015.
Smith is chairman, chief investment officer and founding partner of Third Wave Global Investors. He holds a master”™s from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor”™s from the University of Florida.
United Hebrew presents awards
New Rochelle”™s United Hebrew of New Rochelle, a multiservice senior living campus, awarded its fifth annual Community Service Awards to three individuals: Marissa Brett, president of the Westchester County Association; Pearl C. Quarles, former Westchester County legislator; and the Rev. Martin Biglin, pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Rochelle. The ceremony takes place June 11, 2 p.m. at United Hebrew of New Rochelle”™s Skalet pavilion, 391 Pelham Road, New Rochelle.

”˜Esoterica”™ at Alliance Gallery
Narrowsburg”™s Alliance Gallery is featuring “Esoterica,” paintings by Ioannis Glykokokalos, June 12-July 4, opening reception June 12, 7 to 9 p.m., Delaware Arts Center, 37 Main St., Narrowsburg. “Esoterica” is a combination of paint, paper and fabric to create visual compositions. By reversing the process by sanding and scraping, the artist removes surface layers to reveal an inner painting.
Hospital event raises $50,000
NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital raised $50,000 for its Ashikari Breast Center selling nearly 450 tickets to its wine-tasting event, April 30 at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor. Proceeds are funding cancer education programs.
