CNR awards scholarships to students
The College of New Rochelle presented Sister Dorothy Ann Kelly Scholarships to two high school students at the annual Westchester Women”™s Hall of Fame Luncheon March 27 at the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton Hotel Tarrytown. Judith Huntington, president of CNR, presented the scholarships to Rachel Guglielmo of White Plains High School and Ariana Silvestre of Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers, both of whom aspire to jobs in social service professions.
Named in honor of Sister Dorothy Ann Kelly, the 11th president of the college and a Westchester Hall of Fame inductee, the $5,000 merit grant is awarded to students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and score 1,000 or higher on the SAT. The scholarship also includes a room grant, valued at $4,000 annually. Both the scholarship and room grant are renewable for four years as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.
Friends announce volunteer program
Friends of Westchester County Parks, an organization that encourages the public to support the preservation of the 18,000 acres of parks, trails and open spaces in the county, is launching “Volunteer with Friends,” a community service program inviting residents to help with the beautification of parks. Volunteer with Friends takes place on the third Saturday of each month, from May to October. Activities include raking, mulching, planting, litter pickup and more.

Kids X-Press names new executive director
White Plains-based Kids X-Press, a nonprofit promoting childhood literacy, is appointing Marsha Tom as the new executive director upon the retirement of Nivia Viera, founder, publisher and 14-year veteran with the company.
Prior to joining, Tom served as executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Family Services of Westchester, creating school and workplace-based mentoring programs and leveraging new funding sources. She began her educational career as an art teacher and spent 17 years in the South Bronx as a substance abuse specialist, working with children and families.
MTA appoints Fleischer
New York City-based Metropolitan Transportation Authority appointed Randall J. Fleischer of Mahopac as senior vice president/program executive ”” East Side access/Grand Central Terminal (ESA/GCT) for facility operations and passenger experience. As a key component of the East Side Access project, the creation of a new Long Island Rail Road Terminal underneath Grand Central Terminal represents an opportunity in fashioning how the terminals will function together. Fleischer”™s responsibilities include leading initiatives to ensure a customer-oriented integration of Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road to position the ESA/GCT as a world-class MTA transportation center. He was formerly vice president with Metro-North Railroad and now joins MTA Capital Construction Co., which oversees East Side Access.
“Now in its second century, the future of Grand Central remains bright with the addition of East Side Access,” Fleischer said. “It”™s an honor to join the MTACC project team that will deliver the new underground Terminal and tunnels, creating a historic new crossroad for both Long Island and Metro-North Railroads.”
HVEDC welcomes Giordano
Frank P. Giordano III, partner and shareholder of Middletown-based Judelson, Giordano & Siegal CPA, PC, an accounting firm, has been named to the board of directors for Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp. (HVEDC), an economic development agency for Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties. Giordano”™s experience includes assisting new clients and startup businesses in implementing complete accounting packages, including hardware and software. He holds a bachelor”™s in accounting and finance from Pace University.
OCLT awards two conservation partnership grants
The Orange County Land Trust (OCLT) has been awarded $65,000 in grants from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program, a joint program of the Land Trust Alliance and Department of Environmental Conservation to help protect farmland, conserve natural resources, boost outdoor recreation and tourism and advance economic development. The grants are funded through the Environmental Protection Fund and will be matched with an additional $1.7 million in private and local funds.
Country Bank celebrates new flagship location
Country Bank, with branches in Manhattan, Bronx and Westchester County, celebrated the grand opening of its midtown New York City flagship branch at 655 Third Ave. The location is also home to the bank”™s headquarters and serves as the fifth branch for Country Bank.
WJCS gala raises $730,000 for Westchester programs
White Plains-based Westchester Jewish Community Services, a nonprofit human services agency, raised $730,000 from its annual gala to benefit Westchester County Programs, April 21 at the Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison. The more than 250 gala guests included Kevin Plunkett, Westchester”™s Deputy County Executive and Mike Kaplowitz, vice chairman of the Westchester County board of legislators, who recognized Karen Blumenthal and Emily Grant for their contributions to the county.
Walkway Marathon tops 2,300 runners
The Walkway Marathon Race Services in partnership with Dutchess County government exceeded its goal of 2,300 registered racers nearly two months before runners converge on Poughkeepsie for its inaugural races June 13. Walkway Marathon organizers, including the Walkway Over the Hudson organization, the Walkway State Historic Park, Dutchess County Government, Marist College and the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club expect more than 5,000 races, spectators, supporters and volunteers to attend the event. Registered runners are picking up their bibs and other materials June 12 at the Walkway Marathon Expo at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie.
