The School of Education at SUNY New Paltz hosted a graduation ceremony July 30 for Pine Bush High School students who completed the new Literacy and Education Academy program.
Fifty-one students participated in the interactive and intensive four-week program, which was offered to those interested in pursuing careers in elementary and secondary education.
Upon completion, students received college credit for the course titled Multiple Voices in Education. The course was designed by Prof. Michael Smith, a lecturer in the Educational Studies Department and was taught by Pine Bush educators.
In addition to attending classes at the high school, the students also took part in special sessions led by Robert Michael, dean of the School of Education, and other educators and administrators from the region. The graduation ceremony recognized the students”™ achievements as well the inaugural year of the program.
New SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher hopes to see more college/high school collaborations cultivated. She visited SUNY New Paltz to meet with President Steve Pozkanzer in July as part of her listening tour of the state”™s 64 SUNY campuses.
