Pier 1 Imports employees in New York can soon rejoice.
As part of an agreement reached with Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman’s office, Pier 1 Imports Inc. will end on-call shifts for all employees at its New York stores by January 17.
As part of the agreement, the Fort Worth, Texas-based home furnishings company will also require managers to post store schedules a minimum of 10 to 14 in advance. Pier 1 anticipates ending the practice altogether by the end of March.
Pier 1 Imports is the sixth company that has agreed to end on-call scheduling as a result of Schneiderman’s ongoing investigation, which began in April, into the practice. The others are Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, J. Crew, Urban Outfitters and L Brands, which operates Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret.
In a statement, Schneiderman said it is part of an ongoing inquiry to end the practice of on-call scheduling altogether.
“I commend Pier 1 Imports for recognizing the importance of giving employees predictable schedules, which allow workers to plan for child care and other family responsibilities, enable workers to manage their households more effectively, and avoid the negative consequences of unpredictable work hours,” Schneiderman said.
His office has sent letters to 14 parent companies of national retailers, six of which have agreed to provide employees with their work schedules at least one week prior to the start of the workweek. The remaining said they were not currently using on-call scheduling.
