A 4.7-acre former industrial site in Peekskill looks to become a park, nearly doubling the city”™s waterfront parkland.
A meeting is scheduled for April 7 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Nutrition Room, Neighborhood Center, 2 Nelson Ave., Peekskill, to discuss the issue.
The city has hired landscape architects Quennell Rothschild & Partners to lead the design process. At the April 7 session, there will be a presentation of a revised park plan and landscaping design reflecting input received from 45 community members who joined a similar session on Jan. 21.
Plans include open-lawn areas and waterfront pedestrian paths as well as a boardwalk, fishing pier and kayak launch. An amphitheater, a sculpture walk and areas planted with native trees and shrubs also are planned. The property is adjacent to McGregory”™s Brook, which was used to ship arms during the American Revolution and served as a landmark on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.
The property, known as Peekskill Landing, was used for a variety of commercial uses from the 1870s to the 1990s.
Scenic Hudson negotiated the purchase of the parcel and acquired it with its own funds, simultaneously entering a co-ownership agreement with the city to clean up the site and create the park.
