The interim executive director of the MTA has some bad news for commuters.
Thomas Prendergast, who was nominated two weeks ago to be CEO and chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, said at a press conference last week that the MTA intends to raise fares in 2015 on trains, subways and buses.
Prendergast, who has been interim executive director since January, said the MTA intends to cut $500 million in costs over the next two years. Prendergast awaits confirmation by the state Senate. He previously served as president of New York City Transit.
The MTA had a fair hike in March that increased fares 7 to 9 percent as it continues to try to close a $450 million budget gap. The MTA has increased four times in the past five years.
