Since Wyeth became part of Pfizer in October 2006, it is now the world”™s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer. Since then, most of its 3,000 employees in its Pearl River facility have waited to learn if their jobs would remain secure.
Pfizer announced it would restructure the company and make some changes, including layoffs. It has laid off more than 400 people locally since it acquired Wyeth.
The state Department of Labor announced another 72 jobs will be cut by May 21 as part of the approximately 700 jobs Pfizer told Rockland County it had planned to cut from the location.
Even with the purchase of Wyeth, Pfizer has remained in the black, posting third quarter 2009 revenue of $11.6 billion.
Ron Hicks, president of Rockland County Economic Development Corp. knew the cuts were coming and previously stated he hoped Pfizer would maintain a “strong presence in Rockland. It is our largest employer, so any job cuts are especially painful in this economy.”
