As part of a “go green” initiative by SUNY Orange, students, faculty and staff have a structured method for locating a ride and reducing transportation costs.
The college”™s partnership with NuRide, an online ridesharing community coordinated by MetroPool, will take on-line registrants at nuride.com and pair people from their geographic area or organization.
Once registered, SUNY Orange employees and students will be able to locate others interested in sharing rides. NuRide is open to all residents within the Hudson Valley, making it possible for students to share rides with neighbors living close to the campus or to collaborate on trips to other locations not related to school.
Registering with NuRide earns travelers “points” for each trip saved. Points can be earned for carpooling, vanpooling, telecommuting, taking mass transit, biking or walking.
Dr. Joseph Zurvchak, biology professor and chairman of the college”™s sustainability committee, says “One area where we think we could make a significant difference was transportation. Because all our students commute by car, reducing carbon dioxide even if only by 1 percent will be a significant contribution. We are excited to be associated with MetroPool and NuRide.”
The college has established an email, gogreen@sunyorange,edu where people can direct questions, tips and also receive feedback from Kirsten Gabrielsen, the college”™s administrator for NuRide. She can be reached at 341-4166.
