With a new store in Mount Kisco among the more than 60 opening nationwide this year and 60 more slated for next year, these are heady times for Barnes & Noble Inc., the largest retail bookseller in the United States (627 stores) and a leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products. (Local stores include Eastchester, White Plains, Yonkers, Danbury, Stamford, Nanuet and West Nyack.) After more than 15 years of declining store numbers, B & N is experiencing strong sales, thanks to the significant expansion of the market for physical books driven by word-of-mouth and social media recommendations as well as a community-reflected approach to each store’s design and a strategy of handing control of each bookstore to its local booksellers.
The Mount Kisco locale – which opened Saturday, Nov. 16, at 55-59 S. Moger Ave. in the space formerly occupied by Walgreens, across from Citibank and next to Gap – featured Southport author Kat Ashmore, a former producer and recipe developer for Katonah’s Martha Stewart, cutting the ribbon and signing copies of her recent “Big Bites.”
“We are very pleased to bring Barnes & Noble to Mount Kisco,” said CEO James Daunt, the man responsible for a brand transformation that began after hedge fund Elliott Advisors bought the troubled chain for $683 million in 2019. “This is a beautiful new bookstore, complete with our customer-favorite B&N Café, and it is especially exciting to open just in time for holiday shopping.”
That shopping includes limited quantities of the brand’s signature Signed Editions, with such autographed titles as “Intermezzo” by Sally Rooney, “Be Ready When the Luck Happens” by Ina Garten and National Book Award-winning “James” by Percival Everett. Barnes & Noble will also be offering dozens of the hottest books of the year at 50% off, both in stores and online at bn.com, including “Camino Ghosts” by John Grisham, “Swan Song” by Elin Hilderbrand, “You Like It Darker” by Stephen King and “Martha: The Cookbook” by the aforementioned Stewart. In addition, Barnes & Noble members will earn extra reward stamps on their in-store purchases.
