The Friends of White Plains Hospital will honor former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and his wife Clara with the hospital’s inaugural Community Heroes Award at its annual gala Nov. 7.
The Riveras will be given the award in recognition of their efforts to improve the health and lives of the underserved in Westchester County, hospital officials said.
The gala, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, will include cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and tributes to the Riveras. Tickets are $500, and sponsorship and private reception tickets are also available.
The Riveras founded the Refuge of Hope Church out of their home in 2009 and expanded into a renovated church in New Rochelle last year. Clara serves as the church’s senior pastor, and the couple currently has plans to start an after-school program there for at-risk children.
White Plains Hospital recently partnered with the Refuge of Hope to provide health education, screenings and other information at a community health fair in New Rochelle.
Mariano Rivera also runs the Mariano Rivera Foundation, which provides health, education, social and economic development in the local community.
