More than 500 senior citizens visited Orange County”™s first Senior Expo at Orange County Community College in Middletown Oct. 20. There was something for everyone as both pleasant and not-so-pleasant subjects were addressed.
John Bassano of Home Instead Senior Care was one of the coordinators of the inaugural event and says organizers hope for an even bigger turnout with more information next year.
From services available at home to new senior living facilities to the realities of aging Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties was there to make people aware of what”™s out there.
Registered nurse Mary Mulrooney, who works at Hospice on weekends, says it is a “difficult subject, and it is not an easy field to work in ”¦ but you get a great deal of understanding about what the end of life means to people and to their families.” Hospice made free health-care proxies available to visitors.
More than 75 exhibitors participated, and pullout sessions were ongoing, including seminars on identity theft, reverse mortgages, Medicare part D, warning signs of Alzheimer”™s and long-term care.
If you”™ve missed out on the Senior Expo, there will be another opportunity to learn about what is available for seniors, their caregivers and families at the fourth annual Hudson Valley Circles of Health Expo, which will be held at Lathrop Center at Lakeside Park in Pawling Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Speakers, demonstrations and activities will be featured.
Last year”™s event drew 600 visitors and Barbara Kram of Health Quest.
There will be activities for children, courtesy of the Pawling YMCA Leaders Club, so youngsters are welcome. Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Putnam Hospital and Northern Dutchess Hospital are the lead sponsors of the Pawling Chamber of Commerce event. For more information, call Peter Cris at 855-7000 or Diane Ingram at 855-5387.
