While Orange Regional Medical Center”™s new hospital continues construction in the town of Wallkill, the hospital”™s “Healthy Heart” outreach program is going strong.
For the third consecutive year, the program has received a grant for its Latino Health Outreach, a cardiac screening service provided by ORMC. This year”™s grant for $18,375 will continue to help Spanish-speaking residents in underserved communities to screen them for heart problems, diabetes and stroke. The program has received a total of $52,537 to date from the state Department of Health Office of Minority Health.
The Healthy Heart program provides cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure tests and offers cardiac education and support. Results of the screening are discussed with patients, and each is encouraged to follow-up on their findings. When necessary the program further educates patients and offers referrals to cardiac specialists.
The funding gained from the 12-month grant is being used to provide screenings at Hudson River Health Care”™s Health Centers and Agri-Business Child Development Early Head Start Schools of Middletown, Goshen and Florida. The program has also been invited to join the Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health. Through this affiliation, the program would travel to local farms and packing houses to screen workers.
The goal is to provide cardiac screening services to 300 minority group members during this grant cycle. More than 900 Latinos have been screened via the program to date with funds provided by the grant over the past two years.
