Northern Westchester Hospital expanded its surgical program by becoming the first in the county to perform a successful robot-assisted kidney surgery.
The partial nephrectomy, a minimally invasive procedure, was performed by a medical team led by Dr. Warren Bromberg, co-director of the Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the hospital. The team used the da Vinci Si Surgical Robot which includes such tools as a high-definition, 3-D camera system, and fluorescence imaging technology.
The specialized equipment used during the surgery enabled doctors to view an illuminated tumor site. A special dye made the site and the surrounding blood vessels easier to view when exposed to near-infrared light. The enhanced visibility gives the surgeon a better way of discriminating between healthy and diseased tissue making the diseased portion easier to remove.
In the past, surgeons at the Northern Westchester Hospital have used robot-assistance for surgeries including hysterectomies, prostatectomies, and colorectal surgery.
