Burke Rehabilitation Hospital and Montefiore Health System announced plans for a new partnership that would expand the availability of advanced rehabilitation in Westchester County.
Burke, which specializes in neurological, orthopedic and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, will continue to operate as an inpatient rehabilitation hospital under the Burke brand. It will also operate its outpatient clinics and programs in Westchester Coutny, the Bronx and the Hudson Valley under the Burke brand.
Burke, based in White Plains, and Montefiore have signed a letter of intent and filed a certificate of need. The agreement is pending New York State regulatory approval. The Business Journal reported in June Burke was in talks with Montefiore about a possible partnership.
“This new partnership will allow Burke to offer its established, high-quality medical rehabilitation to more patients, to help improve their outcomes, while collaborating with an organization that supports the Burke mission,” Mary Beth Walsh, chief executive officer and executive medical director at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, said. “We look forward to working closely with Montefiore on providing new services for patients today, and to developing new training opportunities for educating the rehabilitative experts of tomorrow.”
Under the partnership, Burke Medical Research Institute will remain independent of the Montefiore Health System. Montefiore, based in the Bronx, has eight regional hospitals and an extended care facility with a total of 2,747 beds, a school of nursing, and a primary and specialty care network of more than 150 locations across the region.
“Montefiore and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital represent two of the most exceptional physical medicine and rehabilitation programs in the tristate area,” Steven M. Safyer, president and CEO of Montefiore Health System, said. “Many of our patients have already experienced restored independence as a result of Burke and Montefiore providers working closely to enhance mobility and overcome even the most difficult obstacles. As we build on each other”™s expertise in rehabilitative care, I believe the future is bright for residents of Westchester and the Hudson Valley who look to overcome existing physical limitations and live their lives to the fullest.”
Founded in 1915, the 150-bed Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is the only center in Westchester strictly for rehabilitation medicine.
