On Dec. 27, Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced more than $26 million will be available to crimp the state”™s trash flow.
The recycling grants will provide matching funding to counties for recycling and composting programs and to assist with costs such as the construction of facilities; the purchase of recycling and composting equipment; programs to reduce and prevent waste; and reuse projects. Outreach is also slated for funding.
The Department of Environmental Conservation”™s municipal waste reduction and recycling grant program provides up to 50 percent reimbursement to local governments for eligible project costs, limited to a maximum state share of $2 million per project. All projects are subject to a final review and final cost approval. Those in the Hudson Valley on the DEC list include:

Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority: $1,459,875 for recycling equipment.
Ӣ Orange County:
Hudson Valley Regional Council: $375,000 for waste reduction;
Orange County: $393,293 for recycling equipment.
Ӣ Dutchess County:
City of Poughkeepsie: $362,750 for recycling equipment.
Ulster County:
Ӣ Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency: $79,467 for recycling education.
Ӣ Westchester County:
village of Irvington: $8,500 for recycling equipment;
town of Lewisboro: $23,288 for recycling equipment;
village of Mount Kisco: $500,517 for recycling equipment;
city of Peekskill: $44,014 for recycling equipment;
village of Port Chester: $5,000 for recycling education;
Westchester County: $298,125 for recycling education;
town of Yorktown: $13,598 for recycling equipment.
