Unemployment benefits are available for New Yorkers who either live or work in Westchester and surrounding counties, and lost employment due to Hurricane Sandy. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the federal disaster unemployment assistance was “vital aid” for New Yorkers without work because of the super storm.
Cuomo recently announced the much-needed benefits would be extended from Dec. 3 to Feb. 4 for unemployed storm victims.
This is a separate financial provision from the state”™s existing unemployment program. Officials estimate around 4,600 people have already filed for disaster unemployment assistance, while roughly 18,000 filed claims for regular unemployment benefits.
The counties included are: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester.
