Dutchess and Orange counties are gearing up for tax season; free tax preparation assistance is available for qualified individuals and families.
The Dutchess County Department of Social Services (DSS,) the United Way of Dutchess County, the IRS and the New York state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance are teaming up to assist individuals with tax returns and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) claims via an assistance program scheduled Feb. 7 at 60 Market St., Poughkeepsie.
Through the Earned Income Tax Credit, “working families can keep more of what they earn in their own household,” said Dutchess County Executive William Steinhaus. Steinhaus said trained volunteers will be available at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) event to “show families how to maximize their tax return for the best refund.”
Similarly, in Orange County, the Orange County Employment and Training Administration is working with Orange Works, a collaborative VITA partner, along with the Orange County Department of Social Services, to offer free tax return preparation for those needing financial assistance at all three centers.
Orange County Executive Edward Diana said that despite budget constraints, the county is pleased to offer the free service to qualified Orange County residents.
