Unless a deal is reached March 1 between the White House and Congress, $1.2 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years will occur, split evenly between defense and domestic departments like national parks and transportation, severely impacting New York state.
New York state would lose more than $275 million in funding, including $42.7 million in funding for primary and secondary education, and $36.3 million in funding for teachers who assist students with disabilities, according to a report released by the White House.
The state would also lose $12.8 million in environmental funding, and $1 million in grants to protect wildlife. The Department of Defense would see 12,000 New York employees furloughed, reducing gross pay by $60.9 million. Base operation funding would be cut by $108 million.
Other cuts include $1 million in public health funds, $884,000 in job search assistance, and $412,000 in funds to prevent domestic violence.
Cuts to transportation could see long lines and massive delays at the New York area airports, as going through security will take longer.
