U.S. Rep. John Hall, D-Dover, has helped secure $2 million in federal funding to help the town of Cortlandt reconstruct Route 6 (East Main Street), his office announced.
The funding is included in the Conference Report on the 2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill (that the House passed Nov.14).
It must now be considered in the Senate.
“The previous reconstruction of Route 6 in 1996 left much to be desired in terms of amenities and aesthetics,” said Hall in a statement. “The town of Corlandt needs federal support to rebuild this highly traveled road.”
Route 6 runs for 2.2 miles in the town of Cortlandt from the city of Peekskill to the town of Yorktown line, and was reconstructed by the state Department of Transportation in 1996. At that time, Route 6 was widened into a four-lane road with a center turning lane, sidewalks and trees in some areas. However, there was no unified design scheme. The town of Cortlandt has planned to construct a center median and add amenities including landscape improvements to improve upon the previous reconstruction.
Hall stressed that while passing the House is a critical victory, the 2008 Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill must still become law for the funding to be available. If the Conference Report is approved by the Senate, it will need either the president”™s signature or a congressional veto override to become law.
