Republican Rob Astorino is chipping away at Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lead in the polls but still faces a 20-point gap with just under five weeks left to election night.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday showed that Astorino made serious gains since the start of the campaign, although he still trailed Cuomo, a Democrat, 51 percent to 31 percent. Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins received 9 percent.
Cuomo maintains a strong lead in the latest results, mostly due to strong support among female voters. Of the women polled in a survey of registered voters likely to vote, 57 percent said they would support Cuomo compared to 25 percent who said they would support Astorino.
Sixty-eight percent of voters said their minds were already made up for the election, while 29 percent said they might still change their minds.
