Essential workers in New York state can now apply for funding for child care costs, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced.
The funding totals $25 million and can be accessed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted.
All of it comes from the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act and American Rescue Plan Act. The program will be administered by the Office of Children and Family Services.
“Child care is foundational to our economy ”“ without child care, there is no economy,” said Sheila J. Poole, Office of Children and Family Services commissioner. “OCFS is proud to support the families of essential workers, to whom we owe a great debt. They have not only brought us through the pandemic, but are carrying us forward as working families return to the workplace and to normalcy. Quality child care will bring them the peace of mind that they deserve as they support us in our return to work.”
The scholarships are available to families with an income less than 300% of the federal poverty level, or $79,500 for a family of four, for children from ages 6 weeks to 12 years.
It will cover costs up to market rate for each region statewide. Parents can apply online, and funding will go directly to the child care provider on behalf of the parent.
“Essential workers have always been the backbone of our economy, they got us through the darkest hours of the pandemic and are playing a critical role in our reopening and recovery,” Cuomo said.
“These individuals went to work so others could stay home and we must continue to support them in every way we can. We are proud to provide these child care scholarships to our essential workers, giving them peace of mind that their children are safe so they can continue to show up to work each and every day and support their families.”
What about workers for people with disabilities????? You know this field gets left behind all the time. There is never enough honest hard working people in this field who you can trust. These people do not get paid enough. Like the child care workers, these are workers that parents are entrusting others with their precious loved ones who even more so can not defend or speak for themselves. But, yet again the Government and others never think about these people or the caretakers WHO NEVER GET PAID ENOUGH!!!! But pay a person to flip a burger 50,000 a year oh yeah that makes sense!!!! This world and Government is all backwards!!! Life is precious
