New Rochelle retail businesses have until March 31 to sign up for the city”™s required retail business registration program, approved in September.
Failure to register by the deadline will result in charges of $50 per month, up to a maximum of $350, according to an announcement on the city”™s website.
City officials will create a business directory from the collected data, which will include all for-profit commercial businesses that lease or own space in New Rochelle. It will include all traditional retail stores as well as other companies that operate in the city and have a retail function. It exempts nonprofits and religious organizations.
Officials in discussions last year said the registry could be used to police proper uses of buildings and to get a better handle on sales taxes in the city, although enforcement of paying sales tax is the state”™s jurisdiction. City officials also said the program will be used to share emergency alerts, news and opportunities.
Registration is annual and starting next year must be completed in January.
