Joe Visconti, the president of Stratford”™s American Shakespeare Theatre Inc. who ran as an independent candidate for governor in 2014, has announced that he is launching a petition drive to secure a place in the Aug. 14 primary for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.
Visconti initially approached the 2018 election with an announcement to seek the Republican nomination for governor, but then switched to the senate race. During the May 11-12 Connecticut Republican Party convention, Visconti failed to gain enough delegate support to qualify for an automatic spot on the primary ballot. The convention endorsed Hartford businessman Matthew M. Corey for senator and Dominc Rapini, a Branford resident who is Apple”™s national account manager for retail business, gained enough delegate support to require a primary vote for the race.
In a Facebook video announcement from a hotel room in Jerusalem, Visconti stated that his decision to launch the petition drive was based on messages that he received asking for his return to the race, adding that supporters insisted “the candidates that were chosen in the convention were too weak ”“ we need you.”
