Less than six months after winning re-election for his third term, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that he will seek a fourth term in 2022.
In an interview on Albany”™s WAMC-FM, Cuomo gave a very, very early heads-up on his political goals, insisting that he was the best person for the job.
“I believe I am making a difference in the state of New York,” he said. “I believe that in my heart. When I look at my daughters”™ faces, I believe that I”™m leaving this state better for them.”
Cuomo also held up his administration as a buffer against President Trump”™s impact on the national political environment.
“I believe this state is doing great things at a time when a nation is floundering,” he continued. “I believe that. I believe we have the opportunity to set a standard for progressivity and normalcy. I know this job. I work seven days a week at it, and I think we have accomplishments.”
If re-elected, Cuomo would join Nelson Rockefeller as the only New York governor to win four terms in office; Cuomo’s father Mario Cuomo was elected to three terms but lost his bid for a fourth term to George Pataki. However, the longest serving governor in the state”™s history was its first: George Clinton served seven three-year terms and later served as vice president during Thomas Jefferson”™s second term in the White House.
