A Greenburgh shooting range suspended firearm operations last week after a woman said she was struck in her backyard by a stray bullet fragment from the range.
A Birch Hill Road resident said she was in her backyard at the new Ardsley Chase development when she was struck in the leg by a flat circular object, according to town police. The resident received a small scratch on her leg and was treated at the scene, police said, and the woman believed the object that struck her was a bullet fragment.
Greenburgh detectives are now working with several police agencies and analyzing the fragment.
Westchester County Police Revolver and Rifle League on Ardsley Road agreed to suspend operations during the police investigation. The shooting range is not affiliated with any police organizations and is a nonprofit, according to town police.
From what I know of the range, and the deeds to local residential properties, there are clauses in the deeds stating that the purchasers of the residences acknowledge that there is a firing range and they buy subject to the operations at the range, assuming the risks of being near the range. Am I correct? This should be good – in the entire history of the range, not ONE accident like this – maybe the developer messed up with the grading of the property and THAT is the responsible party? this should be REAL good.
Given the proximity of those houses, the range is indeed a hazard. However, even before the construction of those new houses, the range has been a severe noise nuisance to the other local residents and in breach of local noise laws. The town has been slow to act, but this latest incident will be the catalyst to eliminate this range, which is inappropriately located in a densely populated residential area. The range may have been founded in 1941, but there was nothing but woods for miles around at that time. Nothing is forever. Time to go.
If the range was established in 1941 isn’t it the buyers of the houses who are responsible for moving there? If they were aware of a shooing range in close proximity to the property that they were purchasing aren’t they accepting the fact that it is there? if they didn’t want the “severe noise nuisance” they should have bought a house somewhere else. As is typical these days, people do not want to accept responsibility for their own actions! Instead, they point fingers at others!
