The Federal Aviation Administration will invest nearly $1.86 million in runway improvements at Stewart International Airport, U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney recently announced.
Maloney, a Democrat representing the Hudson Valley”™s 18th congressional district, said the grant to the airport and the town of New Windsor from the FAA Airport Improvement program will be used to repave and rehabilitate Stewart”™s two runways. The funds, which total $1,859,650, come from aviation fees, including aviation fuel tax and passenger ticket fees.
Maloney said the federal investment will cover 90 percent of the total project cost. Approximately 11,820 feet of pavement on one runway and 6,000 feet on another will be rehabilitated and repaved.
“This major investment will immediately create jobs, rebuild our infrastructure and grow our economy by attracting more flights and businesses to Orange County,” Maloney said in a press release. He said his office is working jointly with Orange County and New Windsor officials to revitalize the industrial park at the airport “and make Stewart Airport a hub of economic activity for the region.”
Operated since 2007 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Stewart International Airport employs about 2,700 people, according to the Port Authority. Airport operations support more than $750 million in annual economic activity in the region and more than 5,500 jobs.
