Individual contributors in Westchester County donated $35.8 million during the 2012 presidential campaign, according to a recent study by the Sunlight Foundation.
The foundation”™s study, “Political Influence by County,” showed county-by-county breakdowns of individual contributions to candidates and political action committees. Among several interactive maps as part of the study, Westchester was shown to have donated $37.26 per capita to candidates and PACs.
The study also showed that Westchester donated $4.3 million for the Republican presidential campaign as opposed to $3.9 million for the Democratic campaign.
The top 10 counties ranked in the report accounted for 30 percent of all individual contributions during the campaign. All of the communities were in urban metro areas, with New York County and Washington, D.C. with the largest and second largest amount of contributions. Fairfield County, Conn. donated $51.9 million and was ranked seventh in the country.
Rounding out the top 10 were Los Angeles County, Cook County (Ill.), Clark County (Nev.), Harris County (Texas), Middlesex County (Mass.) and Palm Beach County (Fla.).
Neighboring Rockland County contributed $1.6 million, while Orange and Putnam counties accounted for total donations of less than $1 million each.
