Comptroller Sean Scanlon has announced the formation of the Comptroller’s Healthcare Cabinet, a working group consisting of health care professionals and advocates who will offer legislative and policy recommendations related to issues including health care access and affordability.
“Health care is a human right, but the kind and quality of care far too many people in our state receive is still based on who they are and what zip code they live in,” said Scanlon during a ceremony marking the launch of Health Equity Week. “That’s wrong and must change. As Comptroller and administrator of the state’s largest health plan, I won’t stop pushing for change until every Connecticut resident has access to the healthcare they deserve.”
Separately, Scanlon released his monthly financial and economic update, which projected a Fiscal Year 2023 General Fund surplus of $1.42 billion and a $237.4 million surplus in the Special Transportation Fund. While highlighting the state government”™s financial viability, he also acknowledged the concerns among many Connecticut residents about the national economy.
“We continue to see that the easing of inflation is a slower process than previously anticipated,” said Scanlon. “Coupled with the recent collapse of two U.S. banks and the Federal Reserve’s continued rate increases, many residents may currently feel uncertain about Connecticut’s economic future. However, as stated before, Connecticut’s Rainy Day Fund is not only in a historically strong position, but we are continuing to exercise sound fiscal policies and restraint in order to prepare for any downturn that may occur.”
