Westchester County will honor the 111 Westchester residents and 12 former residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11 with a ceremony tomorrow evening at The Rising memorial, located at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
The event, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature remarks by Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, County Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins, victims”™ family members of and members of Hawthorne Boy Scout Troop 1 of the Westchester Putnam Council.
Across the nation and the county, a series of volunteer efforts are being coordinated as part of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. In Westchester, a number of activities have been scheduled from Sept. 9 to Sept. 15, including blood and food drives, a drive to collect paperback novels for soldiers, art projects, trail and park cleanups, and veteran and military outreach.
Astorino and Alisa H. Kesten, executive director of The Volunteer Center of United Way, in a joint statement urged residents to take part in the activities.
“Selflessness, generosity, spirit and pride united us after that horrific day,” Kesten said. “With this concentrated week of projects this year, we hope to rekindle those feelings with positive acts of volunteerism to address local needs.”
