Starbucks has begun a pilot program at three of its stores in the Washington, D.C., area that would expand its menu with 18 new items, including six vegan offerings.
According to VegNews, three of the items are creations “made possible by JUST Egg and Daring plant chicken” and the other three are sweets made with vegan recipes.
While Starbucks has an expansive vegan menu in its locations outside of the U.S., it has been slow to duplicate that effort in its own country. However, the company stated this new pilot program is aligned with its corporate sustainability mission.
“Expanding Starbucks plant-based menu is one of the ways we are pursuing our goal to reduce our carbon footprint by 50%,” a Starbucks spokesperson said. “Our aim is to provide our customers with a variety of choices as part of their Starbucks experience and we look forward to hearing feedback from our partners, employees, and customers.”
