Purchase-based PepsiCo Inc. opened a research lab in New Haven, Conn., focused on developing healthier foods and beverages, its fifth such facility in the U.S.
The company owns Frito-Lay, Quaker and Tropicana, among other brands.
PepsiCo touted the lab as part of a shift to fundamentally improve the nutritional profile of its product portfolio, adding that in the past two years it has added world-renowned scientists and experts in nutrition, food safety, epidemiology and health policy.
PepsiCo also will endow a fellowship at Yale School of Medicine”™s M.D.-Ph.D. program, supporting nutritional research on conditions like metabolic syndrome, diabetes and obesity, with the goal of creating a pipeline of new biomedical scholars who will progress to leadership positions in their fields.
Fritos contain 160 calories per ounce, with about a third of that ounce (10 grams) as fat. A 12-ounce can of Pepsi has 150 calories and 41 grams of carbohydrates.
