Tappan Zee Constructors L.L.C. began preconstruction geotechnical surveys on March 25 to determine soil conditions in and near the Hudson River in preparation to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge. The tests will help designers determine the proper size for piers and supporting foundations for the new bridge.
The barge-based operations will run continually Monday through Friday and possibly Saturday, and are scheduled to take approximately eight weeks to complete. The first barge eased into place Monday amid sleet and snow and a second is expected Tuesday, March 26. Additional barges are expected to follow as construction gins up.
Tappan Zee Constructors, a consortium of builders and engineering firms, said the noise output will be minimal.
None of the work is expected to disrupt traffic.
