In a stunning development, the U.S. Coast Guard reported the sinking of the tall ship HMS Bounty, which was caught in Hurricane Sandy after setting sail last week from Connecticut en route for Florida.
HMS Bounty succumbed Sunday, Oct. 28 some 90 miles off the North Carolina coast in 18-foot seas. Using Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.-built Jayhawk helicopters, the Coast Guard rescued 14 people who made it into life rafts, with two people still missing as of 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29.
The 180-foot HMS Bounty was built as a replica for the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Marlon Brando and Richard Harris. It was based in Greenport, N.Y. on Long Island, and was in New London last week.
