A Trumbull anesthesiologist who administered a fatal dose of Lidocaine by mistake during a surgery in May 2013 was reprimanded and fined $7,500 recently by the state Medical Examining Board.
The website for Connecticut Health I-Team, C-hit.org, made the announcement.
C-hit reported Dr. Sandra Congdon made the mistake during surgery at the Surgery Center of Fairfield County in Trumbull, citing state Department of Public Health records. The drug Hespan, rather than Lidocaine, reportedly should have been administered.
The patient received cardiac life support before being transferred to the emergency department at St. Vincent”™s Medical Center in Bridgeport, state records show and C-hit reported. The patient died, and a medical examiner ruled the cause of death was acute Lidocaine toxicity.
Congdon has attended a seminar on patient safety and risk management and did not dispute the findings concerning the patient”™s death in a consent order issued by DPH, according to the announcement.
