In the wake of this month”™s nor”™easter, the state extended the tax filing deadline for some businesses from March 15 to April 1, and asked the Internal Revenue Service to similarly approve a filing extension.
The storm arrived March 13 and interrupted power for days in some parts of Fairfield County. Tax returns for some businesses organized as either Subchapter S corporations or regular corporations were required to be filed with the IRS and DRS on March 15.
“The destruction caused by the storms seriously impeded the affected taxpayers”™ ability to file federal tax returns due on March 15th,” said Richard Nicholson, commissioner of DRS, in a letter to the IRS. “This relief is totally warranted under the circumstances.”
Businesses taking the state extension should write “March 2010 Storm” across the top of returns being submitted to DRS to ensure special processing. If business taxpayers in the storm area receive a late filing notice from DRS for the March 15 filing deadline, they should call the DRS taxpayer services at (860) 297-5962 to explain the situation.
