Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. workers in Connecticut authorized their unions to declare a general strike, but also gave labor leaders through Saturday, Feb. 27 to work out a new contract with management after the previous one expired Saturday.
Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop is a division of Ahold.
Stop and Shop has 22 locations in Fairfield County, and is buying two more stores in Darien and New Fairfield from SuperValu Inc., the owner of Shaw”™s Supermarkets.
The strike would affect 240 Stop & Shop stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Stop & Shop reportedly has placed help-wanted ads in newspapers in the event of a general strike.
Separately, Stop & Shop announced customers and employees have donated nearly $725,000 for the Haiti relief effort.
