The city of Stamford has tapped a New York City assistant transportation commissioner as its new transportation chief.
Mayor David Martin recently announced the appointment of Joshua W. Benson to the position of bureau chief of transportation, traffic and parking. He could take office in late August, but the appointment still needs the approval of the city”™s Board of Representatives.
Benson has more than 15 years’ experience working with New York City transportation, most recently as the assistant commissioner for street-improvement projects, managing a staff of 45 designers, planners and engineers. Prior to that posting, he served as director of bicycle and pedestrian programs.
Benson holds a master”™s degree in urban planning from Columbia University.
In a statement, Martin”™s office said, “During his tenure, Mr. Benson has played a key role in New York City”™s Vision Zero campaign, developed new programs including the Priority School Speed Reduction Initiative to curtail illegal speeding around schools, and the parking meter bike rack, which converted thousands (of) unused parking meters into functional and attractive bike racks. He has supervised the implementation of scores of pedestrian safety improvements and over 400 miles of bike lanes throughout New York City.”
The mayor”™s office in a statement said, “Benson was selected after an exhaustive search, in which several candidates were interviewed by administration officials.”
