Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. is closing a plant in New York’s Southern Tier region that fits out military helicopters, at a cost of 570 jobs.
At its peak, the plant at Big Flats, N.Y. employed 1,300 people, according to the Elmira Star Gazette. Sikorsky plans to transfer the remaining work to a facility in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Sikorsky has its main facility in Stratford and is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. In the second quarter, Sikorsky had a $213 million operating profit on $1.6 billion in revenue, down from $277 million in profits and $1.9 billion in sales a year ago.
