UNCASVILLE – The Connecticut Sun professional women’s basketball team is being sold to Boston Celtics’ minority owner Steve Pagliuca for $325 million, according to published reports.
The Connecticut Sun, which is currently owned by the Mohegan Tribe, would move to Boston by 2027 once the deal is finalized, reports from several media outlets on Sunday, Aug 3. Pagliuca would also spend $100 million for a practice facility.
The WNBA still needs to approve the sale and relocation, and there are indications that the league may prioritize future expansion over immediate relocation to Boston, according to BVM Sports.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has been vocal in her support for a permanent WNBA presence in Boston, citing recent sellout games at TD Garden. In fact, when the Sun hosted a game against the Indiana Fever last month, she officially proclaimed July 15, 2025 WNBA Day in Boston. The signed the proclamation the same day of the Sun game. It was the second consecutive year the Sun sold out the TD Garden.
Established in 2003, the Connecticut Sun, which was relocated from Orlando originally, takes residence at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville.
